Today is Multimedia Day Part 1 for Groups 1 & 4 ! (see here for the groups!)

Today these groups are at the Bali Safari Park!

This amazing wildlife centre hosts some of the most beautiful creatures on the planet. As part of Taman Safari Indonesia, and a member of WAZA (The World Associations of Zoo and Aquariums), SEAZA (The South East Asians Zoo Associations), CBSG (Conservations Breeding Specialist Group) as well as PKBSI (Indonesia Zoological Parks Associations) It is at the frontline of wildlife conservation in Indonesia and is actively involved in ensuring the future survival and wellbeing of many Indonesian animal species through engaging education and conservation programs such as the conservation and release of Bali Mynah, Sumatran Elephant, and Sumatran Tiger.

Through their Official Facebook pages the contestants have been tasked to raise awareness for one of six endangered species that they will encounter today.
These are as follows;
KOMODOThe Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis), also known as the Komodo monitor, is a large species of lizard found in the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. A member of the monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard, growing to a maximum length of 3 metres (10 ft) in rare cases and weighing up to approximately 70 kilograms (150 lb).

BALI MYNA (JALAK BALI)

BALI MYNA

The Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi), also known as Rothschild’s Mynah, Bali Starling, or Bali Mynah, locally known as Jalak Bali, is a medium-sized (up to 25 cm long), stocky myna, almost wholly white with a long, drooping crest, and black tips on the wings and tail. The bird has blue bare skin around the eyes, greyish legs and a yellow bill. Both sexes are similar.

ORANG UTAN

ORANG UTAN

The orangutans are the two exclusively Asian species of extant great apes. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found in only the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were considered to be one species. However, since 1996, they have been divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). In addition, the Bornean species is divided into three subspecies. ..

SUMATRAN TIGER

SUMATRAN TIGER

The Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) is a rare tiger subspecies that inhabits the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It was classified as critically endangered by IUCN in 2008 as the population was estimated at 441 to 679 individuals, with no subpopulation larger than 50 individuals and a declining trend.
The Sumatran tiger is the only surviving member of the Sunda Islands group of tigers that included the now extinct Bali tiger and Javan tiger. Sequences from complete mitochondrial genes of 34 tigers support the hypothesis that Sumatran tigers are diagnostically distinct from mainland population s.

ELEPHANT

ELEPHANT

Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Traditionally, two species are recognised, the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), although some evidence suggests that African bush elephants and African forest elephants are separate species (L. africana and L. cyclotis respectively). Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, and South and Southeast Asia.

BINTURONG

BUNTURONG

The binturong (Arctictis binturong), also known as bearcat, is a viverrid found in South and Southeast Asia. It is uncommon or rare over much of its range and listed as Vulnerable by IUCN because of a population decline estimated to be more than 30% over the last 30 years.

The uniqueness of their presentations, the content they put across, and who they reach with their information is what will be looked at once the day has finished. The day will be concluded with a fantastic stage performance by the Bali Agung Theatre @ the Bali Safari Park! The camera crews will also be there to record short peices by the contestants, which we will see at a later date.

Follow the contestants on their Facebook pages to find out more!

Tomorrow will be the chance for Groups 2 and 3.
